Activation required

One of my students keeps getting an error saying this account requires activation.

She was ‘activated’ before but seem to have been deactiveated somehow

Hi @Ken_Saville

Was this resolved? Sometimes students mix up servers and I’m guessing that is what happened here. They try to log in, the credentials fail, so they try to reset the password, nothing happens because the account does not exist (no confirmation, for privacy reasons!), then they recreate the account. That last step is where things go wrong. They will sometimes then get confused when the prior data isn’t found in the new account, or have questions about confirming the account, or end up with several accounts using different email addresses!

Accounts at the different public servers are distinct. The student can check the prior activation emails to learn which server that specific account was created at. If they end up with several accounts at the same server, they should consolidate into one and delete the others. They can update their email address if they leave school and want to use a private email address instead.

These and other topics are covered here in the top section: Galaxy FAQs

Please let us know if we can help more! I wouldn’t expect this at a public Galaxy server (for most users) but maybe at a private server if they are refreshing it (purging all users between different training cycles?). The UseGalaxy.eu may also purge users that went through training then never came back (see the server homepage for the details). And, any public server may purge users if they are using multiple accounts in attempts to subvert data/job quotas (for practical/fairness reasons).

If you want to share the server URL I can help to confirm what kind of server it was. And maybe ask the student if any of these other use cases might apply?

I think she sorted it out

thanks
I think it was a two server issue

Yeah, that is the most common. Glad this worked out!
