Is there a tool that will take a collection and take out the files in it into a single entries, so one can work with the individual files?

Include hidden datasets in your history. You’ll see elements from collections. Unhide datasets you need.
Alternatively, try Extract dataset in Collection Operations section. Use index. It starts with zero. It works on collections with small number of datasets. Note that Extract dataset does not add suffix, while unhidden datasets should have original suffix.
