data upload issue

Following error appears when I try to upload the data from a URL shared by my collegue. Data is from her login.

The uploaded file contains invalid HTML content

Welcome @Sangibio !

This message means that the file you are attempting to load contains content that appears to be HTML. The public servers block content that is free code, and not an actual data file. However, this error can also come up when data is not being sent directly by the URL link. Maybe that other server has the data, but it doing something else when transferring the file. This can happen when applications are running tracking programs or installing intermediate cookies and a few other technical situations.

So, start by double checking the data for that URL.

Is the data an HTML report? Maybe the output from a tool like FastQC? If so, it won’t be possible to move it around this way using the Upload tool. If the data is inside a Galaxy history already, your colleague could share the history share link with you instead. They can even copy certain data into a new smaller history and share that with you. Then you can import the history.

If the data is not an HTML report, but instead regular data, then you can start checking into the details of where the data is now. The service is not sending the data directly when someone uses the link.

This second case can get a bit complicated depending on where the data is. This is a search against this forum with prior examples.

The Upload tool is expecting data with “public” access, meaning that anyone with the link can access the file. Some websites involve a bunch of data trackers and related functions, and what is sent is not the actual file, but a pointer to the file. You could ask your colleague to load the data into a public Galaxy server for you, or to move it to another location that will support a direct link.

Please give this a check and we can follow up more. You are working at UseGalaxy.eu and it supports more choices for getting remote data, and we can explain more about those!
