The access to practical session in Galaxy

Hi,
I am writing to request assistance regarding the BINF6000 training. Unfortunately, even I use to log in with my student ID, I am unable to access the training through the following link: redacted
Here are my account details for your reference:

  • Account Name: redacted
  • Email Address: readacted
Could you please assist me in resolving this issue so that I can access the training?
Thank you in advance for your help. I look forward to your prompt response.
    Best regards

Welcome @chinnawongsuwan

I’m sorry that you are having trouble! Hopefully you have been able to reach your instructor by now, but if not, we can try to reach the AU administrators to see if they can can help to clarify the training identifier and the date(s) of training. ping @igor – would you be able to help to identify the correct training session link?

Meanwhile, maybe we can help here.

The initial advice I have is please remember that this forum is public. Please try to not post any sensitive information like your email address or anything else personally identifiable.

After that, maybe I can explain a bit more about how the TIaaS training sessions work. The join link is a simple redirect that adds your account to an administrator dashboard. It also routes your jobs into a special queue that sends your jobs to very tiny clusters. These tend to turn over jobs quicker due to the very low computational needs of those jobs. This allows you to work through certain exercises quickly.

For a training user, when following the join link for a training session, everything “looks the same”. The only difference is that your tiny jobs will likely process quicker. I’m wondering if you were joined but maybe were expecting something different to happen? Also – given the sophistication of the current cluster routing, and the small size of most training data, even if you were not actually joined, you can still run through a training, and will have a good chance that your jobs will still run somewhat quickly due to the size of the data.

What to do

  1. The AU team will see this post in about 8 hours when it is their day (and yours!) again.

  2. You can still work on the training materials using the regular queue.

I hope this helps, and if the problem was already solved, please let us know!

Note to anyone else who followed that training link: These clusters won’t be enough for full sized analysis! Your jobs will likely fail for memory reasons (see exceeds-memory-error ). You have to wait for that training to conclude before jobs will route again to the regular clusters! There isn’t a way to revert this.

Hi @chinnawongsuwan
Please, register with your email address, not the student ID. s12345@uq.edu.au is your student ID. It is not a valid email address. Register another account with s12345@student.uq.edu.au or your.name@student.uq.edu.au. These are valid emails.
Kind regards,
Igor

Hi @chinnawongsuwan,
Sorry, I cannot see the link. Note that you can join the training group only once. If you click at Join link second time, it will show Server Error 500. It means your account is already added to the training group, and all jobs will run under training queue. If you see Error 500, just proceed with the prac.

Kind regards,
Igor
